Level 5 Skim Coat Finishing in Los Angeles
The flattest finish drywall can have, for walls under hard light and dark paint.

Level 5 is a full skim coat over the entire surface, not just the seams. It's the finish to choose for big windows, skylights, wall-wash lighting, gloss or dark paint, and high ceilings, where any seam or sanding mark would show. It's our specialty on custom homes and remodels across LA.
Drywall finish levels, explained
- Level 3: taped with two coats. Fine for heavy texture.
- Level 4: three coats on seams and screws. Standard for flat paint and light texture.
- Level 5: Level 4 plus a full skim of the entire surface. Required for smooth walls under strong light or glossy paint.
When you need Level 5
- Rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, skylights or grazing light
- Smooth, untextured walls and ceilings
- Semi-gloss, gloss or deep colors
- High ceilings and large open walls
- Restoring old plaster to a flat, modern surface
How we do it
We finish the seams to Level 4, then skim the full surface with thinned compound and knock it down flat. After it dries we sand, light-check every wall with a work light, and touch up before primer. Framing has to be straight for a true Level 5. We'll tell you on the walkthrough if any walls need shimming first.
Common questions
Is Level 5 worth the extra cost?
If the walls are smooth and get strong light, yes. Without it, seams and sanding marks often show through the paint.
How long does it take?
Plan on one to two extra days beyond normal taping for most rooms, because of the skim and dry time.
Can you skim over old plaster?
Yes. We skim original plaster to a flat Level 5 surface after repairing cracks and loose areas.
